We are thrilled to report that Governor Brown signed SB 1167 into law!
California landlords cited for a pest infestation are now required to not only eliminate the pest, but also remediate any structural deficiencies associated with the infestation. By connecting pest infestations to the structural conditions that contribute to infestations such as cracks and holes in walls and leaky plumbing, the law encourages the use of the most effective pest management practices that address the root causes of infestations and minimize the health impacts from exposure to recurring infestations and pesticide use. The bill could not have been passed without the leadership of bill author Senator Hueso. We’re also very appreciative of our partnership with the California Association of Code Enforcement Officers and Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles. Additionally, a great many of you submitted letters of support for the bill. Thank you – your voices made a difference!
If you would like to send a thank you to Senator Hueso and his staff member Aracely Campa for their support for asthma-friendly housing, you can email Aracely directly (aracely.campa@sen.ca.gov).
Finally, while we’re very pleased about this win for public health, there’s certainly more to do. We look forward to working with you to keep the momentum going for healthy housing in California!
