Disparities in Prehospital Care for Pediatric Asthma Exacerbations

The Journal of the American College of Emergency Physicians Open contains an article in its October 2023 edition looking at disparities in prehospital care for pediatric asthma. Researchers looked at rates of prehospital administration of corticosteroids and bronchodilators by patient race, locations, and “resources relevant to children using the Child Opportunity Index (COI) 2.0.” They found “there were no racial differences in EMS administration of medications to pediatric asthma patients. However, there were significantly higher rates of EMS bronchodilator administration for encounters in low/very low COIs.”
