Since the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns have arisen about potential long-term health effects. An article titled, “Increased Risk of New-Onset Asthma After COVID-19: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study,” used the Korean National Health Insurance claim-based database to understand the connection between COVID-19 diagnosis, COVID-19 vaccination, and new-onset asthma or lack thereof. The results showed that individuals who had COVID-19 were more likely to develop asthma compared to those who did not have the virus. Vaccinated individuals had a lower risk of new-onset asthma, particularly if they were fully vaccinated. However, in people who never contracted COVID-19, vaccination did not significantly reduce asthma risk. These findings suggest COVID-19 may contribute to asthma onset and that vaccination could offer protective benefits.
