A Systematic Review Demonstrating the Association Between Social Determinants of Health on Asthma and Allergic Disease Outcomes and Healthcare Utilization for Children and Adolescents

A systematic review, released in September 2025 in the journal Epidemiologia, aimed to understand the influence of multilevel social determinants of health (SDOHs) on asthma and allergic disease outcomes and healthcare utilization for children and adolescents. Researchers reviewed 44 studies and found positive associations between the examined SDOH factors, such as neighborhood and residential conditions, discrimination, parental education, housing quality, air pollution, and household income, and asthma and/or allergic disease outcomes and healthcare utilization. These findings highlight the urgent need for coordinated interventions and policies addressing social, environmental, and economic factors to reduce health disparities and improve outcomes for vulnerable children.
