RAMP is pleased to announce the release of new tools for asthma programs to help reduce exposure to wildfire smoke.
People with asthma are at risk of exacerbation from wildfire smoke exposure, and the number and length of wildfires in California have been growing in recent years. Air cleaners, also known as air purifiers, can greatly improve indoor air quality, but that they are often cost-prohibitive for low-income families. We encourage asthma programs to provide air cleaners to low-income clients when possible through grant funds, contracts with Managed Care Plans, partnerships with regional air districts, or donations or discounts from manufacturers. However, navigating the complex field of products is challenging as they vary widely in cost, performance and safety.
To address this challenge, RAMP staff, in partnership with Dr. Gina Solomon of the Public Health Institute, developed materials for asthma programs to help choose safe, effective, and affordable air cleaners for your clients. Please check out our website for fact sheets in both English and Spanish, and examples of air cleaners that your program may consider.
RAMP extends appreciation to the Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment for funding that supported this project, as well as to the many Community Health Workers and air quality experts who provided valuable input and feedback on this project!
Warm regards,
RAMP staff
