Protect Bay Area Clean Air Standards that Replace Polluting Appliances with Cleaner, Efficient Heat Pumps; Deadline 10/30

In 2023, the Bay Area Air District adopted groundbreaking standards that will help accelerate adoption of efficient electric heat pumps, cutting air pollution and making energy bills more affordable. The standards will only apply when existing fossil fuel equipment needs replacement and will phase in gradually starting in 2027 for water heaters and 2029 for furnaces.

Ahead of the 2027 implementation date, the Air District is working to amend these rules to incorporate common-sense, flexible measures. Environmental, health, community, climate and environmental justice groups are mobilizing to protect these standards while working with staff to incorporate measures to help ensure smooth and equitable implementation.

To show your support for the standards, you’re invited to join others in the following efforts:

  1. Sign your organization onto a coalition letter of support by emailing your name and organizational logo to [email protected] by October 30th.
  2. Sign the Sierra Club’s petition in support of Rule 9-6.
  3. Submit a public comment through the Air District’s comment portal. Even a brief message such as “I support Rule 9-6” is extremely helpful, especially in this final month! Public comment closes Nov. 1st.
  4. Share this two-page fact sheet with your partners. An affordability fact sheet is also available.
  5. Make a supportive comment at the final board vote in San Francisco or on Zoom on November 4th at 9 AM. RSVP here.

Thank you for your support!
