The April 2018 edition of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report includes a study that sought “to assess the industry- and occupation-specific prevalence of current asthma, asthma attacks, and asthma-related emergency department visits among working adults.” Researchers analyzed 2011-2016 National Health Interview Survey data for participants over the age of 18 who “were employed at some time during the 12 months preceding the interview.” They found that 6.8% of adults “employed at any time in the past 12 months had current asthma,” 44.7% experienced an asthma attack and “9.9% had an asthma-related emergency department visit in the previous year.” The researchers also found “current asthma prevalence was highest among workers in the health care and social assistance industry” and “in health care support occupations.”
