Study Examines Asthma and Comorbid Conditions’ Effects on Sleep and Academic Performance

In the October 2018 edition of the Journal of Pediatric Psychology a study “sought to examine unique and combined associations” of several common comorbidities “on sleep and academic performance among urban minority children with persistent asthma.” The comorbid medical conditions included “allergic rhinitis, obesity, and sleep disordered breathing.” Researchers examined the conditions of 249 urban children aged 7-9 years and developed a cumulative risk index score of asthma-related comorbidities. The researchers concluded there is “increased risk of shorter sleep and more frequent school absences among urban minority children with asthma and more comorbid conditions.”
