The April 2018 edition of Scientific Reports contains an article investigating the effects of antibiotic use for early-life bronchiolitis on new-onset asthma in children. Researchers looked at children with records of bronchiolitis during their first two years and examined which specific antibiotics were used and the age at asthma onset. The researchers found “there was a relationship between risk of new-onset asthma with use of a high dose of an antibiotic.” Certain types of antibiotics – including macrolides and azithromycin — “had the greatest effect of development of asthma.”
